foto files | kate mathis

nothing captures my attention more than great photography and exceptional styling (regardless of whether the medium is food, clothing, furniture, or a space.) kicking off two recurring series on this blog. (yes, the plural of series is apparently still the word series. quite unnerving isn’t it?) one is “stylist files,” it spotlights the imaginative stylists that are the genius behind the images we adore. the other is “foto files,” it features remarkable photographers that everyone should be talking about.

today the focus is on kate mathis. she has a winning combination of brilliant, yet simple styling and completely arresting photography. check out more of her work here. (and if you know any great photographers/stylists that would be excellent for this series, let me know!)

blog travels | eclectic chandeliers

excited about a girl's road trip to philly this weekend to visit an amazing friend who also serves as my muse.  (we'll sit there and she'll literally start spurting out unconventional ideas for future onyx feather collections like some sort of design savant. it's incredibly unnerving for outsiders to observe.) also can't wait to explore the off-beat vintage philly has to offer. been gathering inspiration for the next line which has led me to aggregating images of chandeliers. (this hot pink one is so wicked it's nonsensical. love it.) here are some vintage and modern chandeliers i've unearthed during my blog travels and paired with complementary dresses. enjoy the weekend!

love how the feminity of the crystal droplets is reflected in this valentino dress.

king ludwig II's bedchamber chandelier. intense right?
only an oscar de la renta dress can stand next to that.

more modern than the others. interesting how much this elie saab dress mirrors this chandelier. even her necklace parallels with the hardware on the right.

food styling | brussel sprouts roasted in truffle oil

decided to tackle brussel sprouts last weekend.  my secret weapon? truffle oil. with just a few drops of truffle oil goodness any mediocre recipe can be transformed into foodie-euphoria. (truffle oil is the movie equivalent of that healing potion in narnia/lord of the rings/harry potter--basically any weird good vs. evil fantasy film--that the hero pours on a wound and suddenly it's healed and 5x better than it was before.)
recipe:
cut off the ends of the sprouts and halve them.  blanch them in boiling watering and rinse in cold water. add a bit of good olive oil, sea salt—more than usual because brussel sprouts absorb itfresh black pepper, a dash of red pepper flakes, and a tablespoon of truffle oil. toss around in a cast iron pan and then roast in the oven for 30-45 mins at 400 degrees until dark brown and crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. bon appétit.

wild thing! | dragon fruit

wicked right?  currently searching every farmers market within a 15 mile radius for this elusive fruit with a slight cactusy flavor.

blog travels | food styling

if i were a green vegetable lying in the grocery store i'd sacrifice myself to the owner of the smitten kitchen food blog. i'd roll up to her cart and say:  "take me. peel me. slice me. dice me. boil me. oil me."

because i'd rather die with delicious food-styling dignity in her kitchen than in the kitchen of a hassled soccer mom who throws me into a pot of congealing hamburger helper.

blog travels | tastes like edible art

freakishly hot in dc today. so hot that all the women wearing avia tennis shoes and bobby socks with their ann taylor suits (shiver) look like they're walking on hot coals. these popsicles from pop bar are the sublime solution. if only pop bar was located in dc.

blog travels | jewelry storage systems

have been searching for the perfect storage solution for housing all the semi-precious stones, jewelry tools, and finished onyx feather necklaces. finally: the answer (above). it involves a lot of painting. with black paint. which i swore i would never do again after the black paint kitchen fiasco of august 09. but i'm a different person now. the kind of person that doesn't run from spiders or accidentally get black paint and dr pepper all over the floor of the kitchen at 3am in the morning while listening to the usher pandora station.

blog travels | food styling

love food. and love great styling. end result: huge fan of the cannelle-vanille blog. the recipes are insanely creative (innovative twists on normal recipes) and the food styling/photography is incredible. featured above: red currant and raspberry swirl ice cream sandwiches.
yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.
